Susanna Carew, Psy.D.

Owner & Clinical Director

Dr. Carew is a licensed clinical psychologist in New Jersey with over 25 years of professional experience in the mental health field.  She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology with a minor in Computer Science from Oberlin College in 1995, a Master of Science degree in Group Counseling & Organizational Dynamics from Drexel University in 1998, and both a Master of Science and Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2007.  Her predoctoral internship was completed at the Center for Family Services and post-doctoral training was completed at Rutgers University - University Correctional Healthcare.


Dr. Carew began her professional journey in mental health at the age of 19 during as a mental health camp counselor for behaviorally disturbed children in West Chester, PA. Upon graduating from college, she worked as residential counselor for the Devereux Foundation in Malvern, PA until entering graduate school. Post-masters, she began her psychotherapy career as a staff clinician with Community Treatment Solutions (now an affiliate of Legacy Treatment Services), then continued on to work at an adult partial care program in Pennsauken, NJ. Following her post-doctoral training at Rutgers UCHC, Dr. Carew held a position as Forensic Mental Health Clinician providing crisis management, counseling, and evaluative services to incarcerated youth in both secure care facilities and community programs throughout the New Jersey Juvenile Justice Commission while also providing trauma-based in service trainings to custody, education, and social service staff in the JJC.


After ten years with Rutgers and youth corrections, Dr. Carew fulfilled a life-long goal of creating a mental health group practice. Along with her husband, Scott, Emerge Behavioral Health was founded in 2018. Having worked in both community mental health and corrections with youth and adults, Dr. Carew found it a necessity to integrate trauma-informed case conceptualization and treatment into her practice - an approach she promotes and encourages in the practice of psychotherapy with all staff at Emerge Behavioral Health.


Dr. Carew serves on the board of the South Jersey Psychological Association, as board secretary, and is a member of the New Jersey Psychological Association.  Apart from professional life, she and her husband have two adult children, two dogs, a cat, and a bearded dragon. In her spare time, Dr. Carew enjoys traveling, hiking, kayaking, attending music and stand up comedy events, is an avid supporter of the Phillies and Philadelphia Union, and is a member of No-Name Pops Festival Chorus .
