Dr. Kawano is a licensed clinical psychologist in both New Jersey and New York. She holds both a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and Master of Science in Clinical Psychology degrees from California Lutheran University, and a Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from the American School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University Orange County.  Dr. Kawano completed both her pre & post doctoral training with University Behavioral Healthcare with Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey where she is presently employed full time as a forensic clinician.  She has previously worked in inpatient facilities, outpatient community mental health, pediatric oncology, juvenile corrections, and collaborative experience with those involved with probation and the court system.

While she has worked with various populations, she specializes in working with adolescents and young adults that struggle with anxiety, depression, substance abuse, trauma, and other sources of distress (i.e. relational issues, life transitions, grief/loss).  She utilizes various therapeutic approaches, but is not limited to: mindfulness therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, schema therapy, attachment-based therapy, and eye movement desensitization reprocessing (EMDR).

Dr. Kawano strives to provide clients with the opportunity to share and have their unique emotional and personal life experiences validated.  She believes the therapeutic relationship is pivotal in the treatment response of clients.  Her goal for clients is to help them see their issues in an expanded framework, help them develop a deeper understanding of themselves, examine how early life and present experiences and situations potentially contribute to deeply embedded ways of thinking and behaving, and understand how cultural factors and temperament may contribute to distress.
